Women Light Artists
“Light as an artistic medium has an almost limitless power that encourages the contemplation of nature, life and even death”, say the curators of the Light Collective project and the authors of the Women Light Artists publication. In the process of creating the book, Sharon Stammers and Martin Lupton asked 40 women who work in lighting to go behind the scenes of their practice and talk about major projects ranging from interior lighting to large-scale installations.
The Women Light Artists book is the next step in an ongoing project by the British company Light Collective called Women in Lighting. After creating a community of women lighting artists from around the world, the team later organized a small exhibition at London's SoShiro Gallery to celebrate their contributions to the lighting design field. The philosophy of this initiative is also revealed in Women Light Artists: curators Sharon Stammers and Martin Lupton sought to draw attention to professionals whose work against the backdrop of a predominantly male community often remains invisible to a wide audience. During the preparation of the book, the team spoke to several hundred lighting designers, forty of whom offered to go into more detail about their projects. The works on display range from immersive light environments and bright luminescent objects to full-fledged spatial stories conceived and realized through the art of light. Each artist's projects are complemented by a small profile that allows readers to dive deeper into the author's creative practice.
Among the heroines selected for publication are Alexandra Stratimirovich, Claudia Paz, Dorothy Tanner, Kate Macmillan, Yoko Seyama and others. With the help of the book, the authors hope to inspire women lighting designers around the world not to be afraid to express themselves and their achievements, as well as to give a boost of creative energy to all professionals working with light.
