Imagine: what design will go down in history
To predict what will become a classic – not only in design but also in art in General – is extraordinarily difficult. Unrecognized during his lifetime artists today hit record sales, and furniture that did not wait for mass production during the life of its creators, today reissue brand new. Still, nothing prevents us to imagine what the objects of modern design will go down in history. We asked five designers, and got very different answers.
Max Kasymov designer
I confess that the Creed chair Wood designer Rodolfo dordoni for Minotti is one of those pieces of furniture that I love personally. The first time I saw a collection of Creed in Milan in 2016 and it made a huge impression on me, becoming a strong source of inspiration for several subsequent projects. Rodolfo dordoni reinterpreted furniture is very popular now a legacy of the 70-ies of the last century, retaining the recognizable features of these items, but giving them a bright, modern sound. In fact, he created "a new design icon of the 70s". This is the timeless design that many years later will remain relevant and in demand.
When you look at the concise form of the IC Lights Suspension (1,2)b created by Michael Anastassiades for Flos, it seems that this lamp has always existed – so simple and obvious design. In fact, it was invented just a few years ago and then "disassembled" interior designers from around the world. Today, the IC Lights Suspension can be seen almost in every known project. Be in the interior of this lamp – it is a certain sign of good taste.
Perhaps this is the rare case when even at birth, the subject has become recognized as a classic design.
Carpets from the collection "Erased classics", design by Jan Karon. At the time this collection was brought to Jan worldwide fame, and I understand why. Its rugs with these beautiful blurred as if erased, disappearing classic patterns and ornaments – real art objects. While they are quite versatile and fit perfectly in almost any interior style. Such things remain in fashion forever.
Catherine Vagurina subject designer
I think our design market is saturated. When I was asked to choose a contemporary design objects which, I think, will go down in history, I thought, "Oh, so many of them, now can easily make a selection". But looking at your tabs, Pinterest and saved the picture to Instagram, I realized that it was incredibly hard to determine what will go down in history. There is just so much, but everything is bright every day that I'm not even trying to memorize the names of objects and names of designers. In my head – an endless gallery of pictures and images. They're all awesome, very "interamnia", but mixed in the head, and to highlight something specific is almost impossible. There is a feeling that all of these items are more or less the same, made in accordance with the fashion trends.
In an era of overabundance of things and world problems related to the huge amount of non-recyclable waste, including plastic, logically, if the story will include things made by special technology with an eye on eco, made from recycled materials and is ready for processing. Recycle – perhaps the most important trend of today.
If to talk about the designers that I personally like and whose items I hope will go down in history is, first and foremost, the Spaniard Jaime Hayon and fellow Frenchmen Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.
Nasiba Boimatova designer
I guess I'm not very original in my collection, but I chose those items, rather strongly impressed me at first glance and kept in my mind the question: "How the designer was able to come up with something beautiful and at the same time simple and concise outside of time?". Each selected subject so self-sufficient that put him in the empty space, it will beautify it, make it unique, form for themselves.
Bubble sofa from Roche Bobois, created by French designer Sascha Eintracht Frankfurt is for me the real object design, which exists on the verge of the past and futurism. It is both simple and self-sufficient. It looks like the art-object and put it in the desert – it will not be lost.
This piece is a tribute to the form, and form is the starting point of any design, because it has a meaning.
I can't decide which rug collection Cc-tapis I like: Patricia Urquiola or from the beautiful and talented Mae Ingelger. Bliss Wall carpets, Slinkie, etc is a true celebration of color and form embodied in the plane. These rugs made a splash, and, in my opinion, they reflect the search for modern design – a look into the past and experiments with the future.
Lamps from Vibia Wireflow collection from Arik levy and PIN created by the Japanese Ichiro Iwasaki, both collection magical, it's difficult to choose. But both, in particular Wireflow, is so impressive and amazing how it is possible to connect geometry and the air and create volume at the expense of ordinary cable. The forms that people use, exist outside of time here again woven the past and the future.
Nadya Zotova designer, founder of Studio Enjoy Home
It seems to me, is not very appropriate to talk about what will go down in history: we don't know exactly what items will become iconic and which are not. Now a cult are, for example, the Barcelona chair designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich and Eames chairs, but they are, of course, was created more than ten years ago. Only time will tell, of contemporary design will remain in history and what will go. One thing is certain: mass production and current technology can do anything, and in an infinite number of instances. So, most likely, will go down in history things that are either made by a unique technology, or represent something special, individual and exclusive. All that is now produced in millions of copies, hardly will go down in history.
Alexander Malakhov designer, founder of the project PanelPanel
In my opinion, one of the most notable phenomena in the world of modern design over the last 10 years is a dense infiltration of modern art into the territory of design. This is evident not only in the subject design and decor but also in the materials. Me as an artist and designer in the field of art and craft design very interested.
The subjects on which I would draw attention to is the work of Ferruccio recently presented, Vincenzo De Cotys, Charles Kalpakian light Studio Apparatus and experiments of the Duo Andrea and Simone of Trimarchi Ferritin of Studio Formafantasma.
And yet – the experiment with authentic crafted design, at the intersection of craft and art, for example, the work of Denis Milovanov. Custom furniture, so-called bespoke-direction, when the designer receives the product is not mass produced and are made individually to order that will remain in the future.
